Meet The Coolest New Storage Device [Transporter]
Dec 7th 2012, 21:04

Today we're taking a look at a peer-to-peer storage solution that, in a bizarre plot twist, doesn't have anything to do with the Cloud. Meet the transporter. It's a network attached hard drive that automatically syncs data with other transporters that you add to your personal network. Check out the KickStarter page for the Transporter here: www.kickstarter.com Unlike dropbox, your data isn't hosted on any server anywhere, so you have complete privacy within your own personal network. This is a big thing for some people, especially businesses who don't necessarily want all their information chilling on some 3rd party server. Furthermore, the device doesn't come with any monthly fees associated with its use, so a one-time purchase is all that is necessary. A software interface lets you decide what gets shared with who, and after that, you're pretty much good to go. The main drawback that we see so far is the high initial cost. At $179 for the bare device and about $50 for a 500 GB Hard Drive, you'll be out nearly $230 just to get up and running, and $460 if you want to set up two. Nonetheless, keep in mind that a 500 GB Dropbox plan would run you $600 a year, every year. We're curious to see what you guys think though, so leave us a comment letting us know if you think this is a cool new product, or not all that appealing, and we'll see you next time, on AskMen.
