Nicole Kidman: 'Eyes Wide Shut' Didn't Cause Marital Problems With Tom Cruise Oct 24th 2012, 18:30 Nicole Kidman addressed what was apparently a wide-spread myth in Hollywood in an article she wrote for the Hollywood Reporter Magazine. The rumor was that making the movie ‘Eyes Wide Shut‘ with then-husband Tom Cruise was the beginning of the end of the Nicole and Tom’s marriage. The director, Stanley Kubrick, wanted Tom and Nicole to use their own marriage as inspiration for their acting. “People thought that making the film was the beginning of the end of my marriage — but I don’t really think it was. Tom and I were close then, and it was very much the three of us. Onscreen, the husband and wife are at odds, and Stanley wanted to use our marriage as a supposed reality. That was Stanley: He used the movie as provocation, pretending it was our sex life. Which we weren’t oblivious to, but obviously it wasn’t us. We both decided to dedicate ourselves to a great filmmaker and artist.” It sounds like Tom and Nicole had a good sense of the distinction between fantasy (or movie-making) and reality.
